Doug Mangione, Political Director EMPLOYEE FREE CHOICE ACT At this time we are still putting pressure on Diane Feinstein to support the act as written .The NY Times reported that the card check provision was dropped in the senate conference. The card check provision stated that if you got 50%+1 of the workers signed a representation card the company would have to negotiate without holding an election. Labor leaders are disputing this stating "the bill is going through the usual legislation process". There probably will be compromises but like any negotiation we if we drop a provision easily the business group will attack the next provision that they don't like which is mandatory arbitration. We have to keep up the pressure on all of our elected officials especially Feinstein. Keep the calls and letters coming; let them know how important this is to all workers. One councilman,Don Hanson is reportedly pushing to repeal prevailing wage requirement for city jobs from the charter, but we have not confirmed this and it was not discussed at meeting that I attended wed night along with bldg trades rep Jim Adams .In public comment we let the committee know how we feel about this issue and how it affects construction workers, union and non union alike, Saving money by paying low wages is not the answer to budgets problems. In the long run you lower the tax base and the purchasing power or workers who buy less products from small businesses which puts them out of business. We will keep on top of this and keep you informed. IRVINE Irvine is a charter city and does not require prevailing wage on city jobs but the city council has passed prevailing wage for any Great Park projects. This was achieved in a 3to2 vote by council with Larry Agran,Beth Krom and Sukhee Kang voting for and Christina shea and Steven Choi against. This was a great victory and Councilman Agran promised to bring a vote to require prevailing wage for all city projects. Larry Agran has made good on his promise and has worked with us to get speakers and our contractors to speak, but now Mayor Suhkee Kang is having 2nd thoughts about doing this at this time. We think there is no better time to raise wages than now. Workers discretionary income, income used to buy non essential items, is dramatically down which means a lot of businesses suffer. If you can barely afford to buy food and a place to live you are not buying cars, computers, entertainment and all the other stuff that consumers buy. Call Larry Agran and Beth krom, who is going to run for the 48th congressional against John Campbell, and thank them for their continued support and call Mayor Suhkee Kang and ask why he doesn't support prevailing wage for Irvine. We have had 200 bldg trades workers attend the last two rallys ,lets get a good IBEW tournout for this one.
